100 words — A Basic Definition

Kizuna is a distributed, peer-to-peer, non-profit messaging application that prioritizes privacy, security, and user-centricity.

Distributed — Data in Kizuna is stored in small pieces in many places instead of everything in one place we own. This makes Kizuna safer since bad guys don’t have one place to get everyone’s data.

Cloud-enabled — You can access your data from any device you have since your data is stored remotely, while you are still being the only one in control of your data.

Peer-to-peer — We are never in the middle of anyone’s conversation in Kizuna. You can be sure that your messages and calls are only reaching the person you intended to.

200 words — Features

Messaging — Send heavily encrypted, instant messages to your family and friends without the fear of someone peeking through your conversations.

Voice and video calls — Feel closer to your contacts through secure, high-quality voice and video calls over a P2P network. Your voice and video streams won’t have to pass through centralized servers so you don’t have to think about who is snooping through your calls.

File sharing — Our file sharing feature lets you upload, host, and share your files from a P2P storage system. Your files are already encrypted before storage so you wouldn’t need to worry about security, and they can only be found by people with whom you’ve shared them. Your files will be encrypted until they reach your intended recipient so you don’t have to worry that your file will be read by someone else. Duplicates of your encrypted files are stored so they are available 24/7.

Groups — Create secure groups so you can send messages or securely share files to your intended audience. Each group will have its own network in Kizuna so others do not even know that the group exists.

Self-destructing messages — Set conversation threads to self-destruct after a timer to make sure that the data you don’t want to keep goes away.

300 words — Benefits

No Single Point of Failure — Kizuna doesn’t store any user data on traditional centralized servers (a big computer). This makes it more difficult for bad guys to attack the network and breach security. We use Holochain, a cutting edge distributed peer-to-peer applications framework that guarantees high levels of trust and security.

Privacy with convenience — Conversations in Kizuna are heavily encrypted. This guarantees a high level of privacy in your messaging endeavors while still allowing you to access your messages from any of your devices. Your message threads and conversations will also be hidden by others at any time.

Security — Kizuna is built on top of a truly distributed application framework, Holochain. As such, it takes advantage of the built-in security design of Holochain’s cryptographic (math) encryption and hashing algorithms. Holochain’s architecture prevents anyone from pretending to be someone else so that you can be assured that you are messaging the person you intend to and not someone else pretending to be that person. Aside from that, there will be no backdoor (a sneaky place for anyone to access your data) for any other third party — including us.

Non-Profit — To deliver a pure messaging experience free from distractions, Kizuna will be ad-free so you can focus on creating genuine connections. We never store and own your information on a centralized server (huge computer) which means we do not have your data for sale for advertisement deals.

Open-source — We believe that for this community to thrive, trust should be first established. Trust that your data is secure, that Kizuna will deliver on its promise, and that you, as consumers, are of utmost importance. To realize this, Kizuna’s source code will be completely open-source which means it will be open to any external checks and validations, should it be necessary.

Protect your conversations with confidence.
